AHH PAIN! The next thought is put ice on as per the acronym RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation).
However did you know that:
"Compression of an injury has been found to reduce pain better than ice alone"
There are 4 stages of healing: haemostasis (immediately), INFLAMMATION (2-4 days following), proliferation (2 days to 3 weeks) and remodelling (3 weeks to 2 years). So why do we apply ice to reduce inflammation when this is a key component to healing??
Do you have the answer?? Have any questions?? Let us know.
Did you know that:
"The total length of your circulatory system (veins, arteries, capillaries) stretches an immense 60,000 miles. That is enough to travel around the Earth,.. TWICE!!"
This is quite unimaginable considering how small humans are in comparison to the Earth!
Previously you could only be prescribed medication by the GP. However, did you know that:
"Both physiotherapists and podiatrists will soon have the ability to prescribe medication to their patients within their scope of practice"
This was announced by health minister Norman Lamb on 20/8/13. However, Physiotherapists will have to undertake a specialist training course to enable them to provide medication. They will also need to specify an appropriate need for providing this service. Ultimately, this should remove some strain from the GP service.
Even though lots has changed in the rehabilitation of back pain, many people still believe that lying on the floor is the best form of treatment. NO! Totally against what the National Institute of Clinical Guidance states:
"Non-specific lower back pain sufferers should be provided with 8 sessions of a progressive structured exercise programme over 12 weeks"
Included in the programme should be aerobic exercise, muscle strengthening, stretching, postural control and movement instruction.
If you currently suffer with back pain, or have episodes of back pain, give me a call for some advice on how to manage your back pain.
The menopause is a difficult time for females and males alike. Women get hot flushes...men get shouted at because they aren't doing anything to help! Did you know that:
"Consuming as little as 30mg/day of soy isoflavones can reduce menopausal symptoms by 30-50%"
Soy isoflavones also have additional benefits of reducing cholesterol, prevent bone loss over the short term and also be cancer-preventative when consumed early in life. Soy isoflavones are found in foods such as tofu and tempeh.
A guy named Alvaro Pascual Leone decided to put this to the test. 3 groups played a specific tune on a piano every day for 5 days. However:
- 1 group practiced at the piano for 2 hours
- 1 group sat at the piano for 2 hours thinking about playing that same tune but were not allowed to move their hands
- 1 group were not allowed to sit at the piano.
"Subjects thinking about playing the piano achieved the same results as the group actually playing the piano where as the other group showed no improvement."
What this means is the brain has the ability to adapt even if you are not actually performing the activity. So if you don't have time, thinking alone can actually improve your performance!!
Did you know that:
"On an MRI scan, 35% of 20-39 year olds are found to have a degenerative or bulging lumbar (lower back) disc"
Also to dispel any myths about discs, a disc CANNOT slip out. You will not find your disc on the floor after lifting a heavy object!
A bulging disc can refer pain into the lower limb. If you have lower back pain with radiation of pain into your leg, physiotherapy can help you.
You regularly see astronauts walking to their shuttle ready to start their journey into space. However have you ever seen an astronaut emerging from a space shuttle?
"Due to lack of gravity in space, you can lose up to 50% of your muscle mass. Therefore, stretchers are required to remove astronauts from their space shuttle!"
As there is no gravity, your brain recognises how little muscle exertion is required to move therefore adapts very quickly, reducing unrequired muscle mass. Therefore, you will very rarely see astronauts emerging from their shuttles and running to their family!!!
Most people that are looking to lose weight will go straight for the treadmill at the gym. However, did you know that:
"Muscle is 3 times as efficient at burning calories than fat."
Therefore don't just stick to the treadmill at the gym. Increase your muscle mass in the weights room and turn yourself into a calorie busting machine..
This is the most common subject that I speak about to patients. The theory of knots and the requirement of massage to remove knots. However...
Did you know that:
"Close to 90% of patients with chronic muscular trigger points may have a vitamin D deficiency."
Foods rich in vitamin D are fish oils, oysters and soy milk. Physiotherapy is beneficial to reduce painful muscular trigger points and find out the reason why you get trigger points. Is it posture? Is it training regime? Is it nutrition? Get in touch if you suffer with chronic knots or tightness.
